1. Define horror
Horror explores the darkness that knocks around in each of us. It takes many forms and shapes as subtle or extreme as you please. I think every individual is unique in their fears and yet we all can connect and identify with the similar emotions it brings. If you strike a match against a stone, it creates fire. If I strike fear against your individual imaginations, it creates horror.
2. Your stories are short compared to the ones I usually read. Why? And why only three tales in each of the 3 Tales to Chill Your Bones series?
I designed the series based on one of my personal biases. I love short story anthologies, but sometimes they are so packed to the brim that I feel I can’t choose one. If an author (that I enjoyed reading) said, “Here you go. Here’s three stories about ghosts, short enough to read before you fall asleep.”— I’d be devouring the things. I don’t have to guess which story might be the best one. I can trust the author picked out three of his or her best ones and I can snuggle into my bed or favorite chair knowing my imagination is taken care of for the next hour or so before I tuck in for that night. That is what I attempted to create for those lovely imaginations out there.
3. Your stories have weird freaky things and happenings. This worries me. You don’t do this in real life do you? I mean, like, should I call the police?
9-1-1 is hawt. Wait, that’s May's line in Supergirls. Ha ha. Yeah, before you pick up the phone let me explain. I dread telling people I write horror. Not because I am embarrassed or ashamed (it’s quite the opposite really), but because for some reason folks think that you must be a sicko to write about creepy things that go bump in the night. The truth is that horror writers are about the kindest, thoughtful folks you will ever meet. We tend to write our deepest fears in the form of metaphor. When you dream of dying, it doesn’t mean you actually die. It means you are dying to a part of yourself—say a bad habit or a religious/political view. If you examine the dream you will discover what your subconscious is telling your conscious mind. If it is night in the dream and you are being chased by wolves, then overcome and eaten by them, then I would say there is something that you are “in the dark about.” Someone or something is coming that will overwhelm you, take advantage of you and then consume you. That sounds awful, but it’s probably just a school or work project due the next day. Or maybe it’s warning you to stay away from the new friend you just made. Stories work the very same way. All the dying and torture and fright are metaphors for less threatening things in the real world. So, no, I’m not a stalking pyscho killer in heels with an axe (though the thought amuses me.)
4. How many books will there be in the series?
My stories have been published in over a hundred publications both in print and on the web. So, trust me, there will be an endless supply of Tales to Chill Your Bones. I love the art form of short stories and will never stop writing them.
